88 generation student activists given lengthy jail terms

Nov 12, 2008 (DVB)-Fourteen members of the 88 Generation Students Group have been sentenced to 65 years each yesterday.

They are Ko Min Zayya, Ma Mie Mie, Ma Nilar Thein and her husband Ko Jimmy (aka) Ko Kyaw Min Yu, Ko Zaw Zaw Min, Ko Than Tin (aka) Ko Kyi Than, Ko Zayya (aka) Kalama, Ko Ant Bwe Kyaw, Ko Kyaw Kyaw Htwe (aka) Marky, Ko Pannate Tun, Ko Thet Zaw, Ma Mar Mar Oo, Ma Sandar Min (aka) Shwe, and Ma Thet Thet Aung.

The sentences were handed down behind closed doors in Insein prison’s special court for five charges including violation of electronic laws. The verdicts for 16 other charges are still to come, according to legal sources.

Family members were not allowed to attend the hearing but they heard their loved ones shout ‘We are not afraid. Free Burma!"

In a separate hearing held in Insein prison special court, activist Su Su Nwe was today sentenced to 12 years and 6 months and Ko Bo Bo Win Hlaing who was arrested with her received eight years.

Seven youths from Bogalay such as Ko Pyi Pyo Aung received 24 years, Ko Nay Lin Aung 22 years and the remaining five received eight to ten years each. Wakema National League for Democracy members Ko Maung Kan and Ko Aung Kyaw Soe (aka) Japhee each received ten years. Ko Win Maw, a member of the pop band Shwe Thansin (golden melody) was sentenced to seven years.

Ko Min Ko Naing and eight other leaders were given six months for contempt of court a week ago and transferred to Ma-ubin jail.
