The United States on Thursday placed Burma on its list of worst offenders of human trafficking and accused it of using child soldiers amid global criticism over human rights abuses by the country’s military against the minority Rohingya Muslims.

The United States places China on its global list of the worst offenders in human trafficking, while Burma is upgraded to the Tier 2 Watch List of nations deserving special scrutiny, from Tier 3, which includes countries not complying with minimum US standards and making no significant effort to do so.

Burma now ranks with Uzbekistan, Sudan and Haiti at the bottom of a list of nations criticised by the US government for failing to do enough to end human trafficking.

The US State Department plans to downgrade Burma in its annual report on human trafficking because of the country's continuing failure to end abusive practices.

The trial of 92 suspected human traffickers, arrested after the discovery of shallow graves of migrants in Thai jungle, began in Bangkok on Tuesday.
