ABFSU leader Kyaw Ko Ko not arrested

Oct 16, 2007 (DVB), Kyaw Ko Ko, a leader of the All-Burmese Federation of Students' Unions, was not arrested on 9 October, contrary to reports at the time.

Kyaw Ko Ko was reported to have been arrested along with Ko Sithu Maung and Ma Han Ni Oo during a raid by security forces on a safe house where the group was hiding.

The two other activists were detained by the authorities, but Kyaw Ko Ko has described how he managed to escape with the help of local residents.

"I escaped arrest with the help of people around me who helped me get to a safe place. All the people I passed helped me get away from the authorities," he said.

Now he vows that the ABFSU will keep on uniting students in the fight for democracy.

"We will keep going in any way possible at any time, we will keep going forward. Our motto is that as long as there are students, there will be students' unions. We are working to bring all students from across Burma together. Once we have done that, we will continue our fight," he said.
