Speaking in a voter awareness campaign video released by the Burmese government’s electoral body, Hollywood film star Jolie said, “I know from my visit [in July/August] how important these elections are. I want to urge you to exercise your right to vote and be counted on 8 November.

“Don’t get left behind. Be a part of this historical moment. Go out and check the voter lists in your community. Make sure your name is on that list so you can vote on election day.”

Popular Burmese celebrities and athletes have also chimed in the voter awareness campaign.

In another video commissioned by the Union Election Commission (UEC), singer Phyu Phyu Kyaw Thein said, “The elections planned on 8 November will determine the future of our country, Burma – this will be our chance to shape the future.”

Actor Nay Toe and well-known former football player Myo Hlaing Win also urged voters to be sure their names are on the list.

The UEC released revised voter lists on 14 September, noting the registration of some 32 million eligible citizens across the country. The lists are pinned on notice boards outside local sub-commission offices; those who spot irregularities or the omission of their names can request corrections. The deadline is 27 September.
