BRIEF – 101 Rohingya boatpeople detained in Malaysia

One hundred and one illegal immigrants, believed to be Rohingya refugees from Burma, were detained by an anti-smuggling unit as they landed at Kuala Perlis on Malaysia’s northwestern coast early on Friday morning, state-backed Bernama reported. Citing the unit’s deputy-commander, the report said 41 of the detainees were female and 60 male, and were aged between one and 40. “They came in a boat and were in a weak condition due to cold and hunger, and some of them were not wearing any clothes when they landed on the beach,” the official said.
