BRIEF – 86,000 boatpeople have left Arakan since 2012, says UNHCR

More than 86,000 people, majority of whom are Rohingyas, have left Arakan State by boat since June 2012 to escape sectarian violence, according to a statement from UN Refugee Agency spokesman Adrian Edwards. Edwards expressed concern for abuses suffered by the people trafficked to countries, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh. It recommends for host countries to provide documents for refugees to remain in the country and opportunities to employment, as well as to protect them from arbitrary detention.
