Bauk Ja, Kachin land rights activist and politician, no longer faces charges of “negligent homicide”, though she remains in custody at the Hpakant police station in Kachin State awaiting trial for additional charges, The Irrawaddy reported Wednesday. She was arrested in July 2013 on charges related to work in an unauthorised health clinic in Kachin State. The homicide charge was premised on a patient who died after being treated, but was dropped upon request by the family of the deceased. Other charges include unauthorised injection by syringe. Many have suggested that Bauk Ja’s detention is politically motivated to stifle the outspoken activist’s rights work, said the report.
