BRIEF - Burmese journos call for press freedom in Thailand

The Myanmar Journalists Association (MJA) appealed to the Thai military government on Wednesday to restore press freedom after a 22 May coup. Upon takeover, the National Peace and Order Maintaining Council commandeered broadcast stations, directing some to air state messages. Programming has been mostly restored, but restrictions remain and a number of journalists and academics are in state custody. The MJA expressed “great sympathy” with Thai journalists, having “experienced similar restrictions and persecutions under former governments”.
