BRIEF— Farmers paid out on 17-year land grab claim

Almost 90 million kyat (over US$90,000) will be provided to the victims of a 1997 land confiscation issue in Hlaing Tharyar, Rangoon Division. The settlement came after farmers ended a 40-day protest outside the offices of Wah Wah Win Company, responsible for the construction of Arawratha Industrial Zone on the disputed site. Recipient Nyunt Nyunt Win said that around 80 million kyat was paid per acre of land found to have been confiscated. The resolution came as a result of talks mediated by MPs and the parliamentary commission for land disputes.
