BRIEF - Farmers protest in Rangoon over land, jailed activists

Hundreds of farmers from over 30 townships across Burma gathered in protest on 18 January in front of Rangoon’s City Hall, calling on the government to mediate disputes over land confiscation and the release of jailed activists. The demonstrators also called for the formation of a farmers’ union and for constitutional reform.

Kyauktada Township Police detained and charged protest organiser Nay Myo Zin under Article-18 of the Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession Law, and he has since been released on bail.
