BRIEF – Fort Wayne refugees concerned about US freeze on resettlement

January 24 saw a US state department freeze on fresh refugee visa applications from Burmese people displaced in Thailand. Some 73,000 Burmese refugees have been settled in the US since the now-concluded group resettlement program began in 2005. Minn Myint Nan Tin of the Burmese Advocacy Centre expressed her concern as to future hope for ongoing family reunifications in areas such as Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is home to a 4,000-strong Burmese community and which saw a further 170 refugees settled in the 2014 fiscal year.
