BRIEF – Jade mine firms called to ‘contribute’ by Kachin govt

Mining companies at the Hpakant jade mine in Kachin State have called “unfair and illegal” a recent order by the regional government obliging them to contribute a hefty 10 million kyat (US$10,000) for each quarry under their operation toward the reconstruction of a 60-mile stretch of highway connecting the jade-rich town to Mogaung.

The mining firms say they were previously given a deadline of 15 January to make the payments, and that there were around 15,000 quarries involved in jade-mining in the area.
