BRIEF - Malaysian medical aid pulls out of Arakan, for now

Mercy Malaysia, an NGO offering medical assistance in Arakan State since 2008, has temporarily moved their staff from Sittwe to Rangoon following “heightened tension”, The Star Online reported Friday. The group operates a mobile clinic, assists in the rehabilitation of hospitals and provides non-food items in the troubled region, which is largely off limits to aid workers. The hiatus follows news on Friday that the Burmese government has opted not to renew a contract with Médecins Sans Frontières, claiming that the group’s presence was “detrimental to regional stability”.
