BRIEF — Mobile teams go after illegal imports

More than 12 billion kyat (US$12 million) worth of illegal imports were seized over the last two years, according to a government team of investigators tasked with clamping down on smuggled goods. According to the team, more than 2,500 operations have resulted in seizure of the goods since 2012, mostly intercepted on the Muse-Mandalay route after crossing the Chinese border. Chinese fertilisers, insecticides, and food products are believed to be flooding into Burma through the Muse border crossing, as well as both illicit and prescription drugs.
