BRIEF – Parliament discusses an increase to child support

An amendment to a criminal procedure article stating that divorced women can only receive 100 kyat per month from their former partner as alimony and child support is being processed by the bicameral parliament.  In the lower house on Monday, Mon State MP Khin Htay Kywe requested that this alimony amount be amended to reflect current costs of living and inflation rates. The 100 kyat amount, about US$0.10, is stipulated in the 1898 Code of Criminal Procedure and has not been revised since.
