BRIEF – Smuggling enforcers may get higher commissions

Burma’s government is considering increasing the reward offered to Mobile Team agents and members of the public who tip information that leads to the arrest of smugglers, according to Trade and Commerce Minister Win Myint. The Mobile Team – made up of police officers, customs officials, government officers and media workers – currently receive 10 percent of the value of the goods seized in each case. More than 12 billion kyat (over $US12 million) worth of contraband was seized in 2,500 operations over the past two years.
