BRIEF – Thai officials demoted for extorting migrants

Five Thai officials have been demoted following accusations of extortion at migrant checkpoints, local media reported. The five, supervisors at national verification centres in Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Chiang Rai, Tak and Ranong provinces have been temporarily transferred to technical staff positions. Claims that they charged migrant workers about three times the official cost of a visa are being investigated under the command of newly-appointed Employment Services Director Gen Sumet Mahoset, according to The Manager Online.
