BRIEF – Tourist bucks should help conserve Inle Lake

Local MP Win Myint says a proposal has been summited to the Shan State government requesting that half the income generated by foreign tourism to Inle Lake – estimated at 750 million kyat out of a total 1.5 billion kyat last year – is reinvested into the development and conservation of the natural heritage site. Inle Lake is suffering from the effects of deforestation, increased agriculture and waste, he said. Beginning in 2013-14, foreign visitors were asked to pay $10 each to visit the lake, and about 150,000 foreigners made the journey.
