BRIEF – UN honours Burma for fight against hunger

Burma has been recognised by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for its achievement in fighting hunger, reducing the number of people without enough food by half since 1990.

Most recent estimates published by the organisation show the proportion of undernourished people in Burma has decreased from 62.6 percent to 14.2 percent of the population in the 25 year period, and the number of undernourished has been reduced by 19.1 million.

The UN commended Burma for reaching the 1996 World Food Summit goal dedicated to eradicating hunger.
