Ethnic Kayan demand full ethnicity status in census

Representatives of the ethnic Kayan people, officially recognised in Burma as a sub-group of the Karenni, have demand that they be registered as “Kayan” in this year’s census and not under any sub-group ethnicity. In a statement released 11 January, the Kayan delegates said all four official sub-groups of the Kayan should be given the right to register as a full ethnic group and said that listings as a sub-group were a form of discrimination.

Various other ethnic groups across Burma have also voiced concern at the categorisation of ethnic and sub-ethnic groups in the census which is due to be held from 30 March to 12 April.
