NGO says 900 Rohingyas fleeing Burma every day

Director of the Arakan Project, Chris Lewa, said on Saturday that since 15 October an average of 900 people a day have fled Burma on rickety, overcrowded boats in a desperate attempt to escape persecution in Arakan State. The total number of Rohingya “boatpeople” fleeing persecution in Arakan State has now topped 100,000, she added. Although hundreds have already died during the voyage, Rohingyas are still willing to pay brokers a small fortune to help smuggle them to Malaysia and other neighbouring countries.
