OIC appoints former Malaysian FM as new envoy

The secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, has appointed Tan Sri Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar, the former foreign minister of Malaysia, as his special envoy for Burma. Albar has also served as Malaysia’s minister for law, home affairs and defense. The OIC was last year refused permission to open an office in restive Arakan State where the persecuted Muslim Rohingya community lives, and doubts remain as to whether the Burmese authorities will fully cooperate with the new envoy.
