BRIEF – Union seeks compensation for Dalny Vostok seamen

The Myanmar Seafarers’ Union is seeking compensation from recruitment agencies on behalf of the Burmese seamen who were aboard the Russian trawler Dalny Vostok when it sank on 1 April. The was not one of 4,700 international liners registered with Burmese authorities, and the crew had been told they were being placed on cargo vessels as opposed to trawlers, according to state-owned Global New Light of Myanmar. As well as compensation the union is reportedly hoping to see the relevant agencies banned.
