Bomb explodes on bus in Bago township

Jan 17, 2008 (DVB), A bus conductor was killed when a bomb exploded on a passenger bus travelling from Kyaukkyi to Rangoon yesterday, according to Burmese state media reports.

The bus was parked outside the Sagaing Lay Malar restaurant on the Rangoon-Mandalay highway near the 68th mile post in Pyinpongyi village, Bago township, at the time of the incident.

The New Light of Myanmar reported that 35-year-old Lwin Soe was killed in the blast.

This is the fourth bomb explosion in Burma in less than a week.

On 11 January, a device exploded Pyinmanar railway station near the new capital Naypyidaw, killing one woman, followed by another attack later the same day in Phyu township, Bago division, which killed one and injured four.

Another bomb exploded on 13 January near the ticket counter at Rangoon railway station.

The Burmese military regime blamed the first Bago explosion on the Karen National Union, but no individual or group has claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.

State press reports said that both attacks on 11 January used identical US-made explosives, and claimed that "a major group from abroad that is desirous of practising hegemony over Myanmar" was behind the bombing campaign.
