Independent experts will investigate what type of devices and tactics were used against protestors during a police crackdown at Latpadaung Copper Mine last week, said Aung San Suu Kyi.
During a press conference in Rangoon today, the opposition leader and chair of the commission charged with examining the incident said no government personnel would be involved in investigating matters concerning the techniques used to suppress the protestors.
Suu Kyi said the commission is also reaching out to the police and concerned authorities regarding the arrest of activists who participated in demonstrations against the crackdown in Rangoon on Sunday.
During the press conference, the commission reported that 73 people in total were injured during the assault at the copper mine on 29 November, where police allegedly used water cannons and incendiary devices to disperse protestors during a pre-dawn assault on makeshift camps near the mine.
The commission’s secretary Kyaw Tint Swe said 67 monks were among the injured. Several individuals were later hospitalised with burn injuries that they sustained during the police crackdown.
Suu Kyi went on to note that the actual number of the people injured during the assault could be higher because there were individuals who were not hospitalised and sought treatment elsewhere.
