Burma’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), on 29 March announced that it would boycott controversial elections this year. The decision means that the party which formed in the wake of the infamous 1988 uprising will be legally abolished and no longer able to operate within mainstream Burmese politics. Had they chosen to contest the elections, however, they would have been forced to expel the revered party leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The decision has received mixed criticism: international leaders have united in support of the party, but fears have been voiced inside Burma about the party’s tenuous future.
