Head teacher demoted after assault allegations

Jan 22, 2009 (DVB), A primary school head teacher in Yaynanchaung has been demoted to teaching kindergarten after being accused of sexually assaulting two young girls, according to a relative of one of the girls.

The 59-year-old headmaster from a school in Phogon village group was removed from his position after an investigation into the allegations, but continues to work with young children as a teacher.

The aunt of one of the girls, who were aged 12 and 13, said the assault took place about two weeks ago.

"He touched the girls on inappropriate parts of their bodies on 8 and 9 January, and when they tried to stop him, he punched them in their heads," she said.

The girl's aunt said the case was investigated by Yaynanchaung educational department chief Tin Tin Latt and the headmaster was demoted to teaching kindergarten students.

She claimed the man had escaped more severe punishment because he is the current organising supervisor of the village Union Solidarity and Development Association and because his two sons are officials in the army.

Local villagers said they wanted the case to be brought to court and the head teacher to be dismissed.
