IED fells tree in Hpa-an; no one injured

A banyan tree was the only casualty when a roadside bomb exploded in the Karen State capital of Hpa-an on Wednesday morning, but whoever was behind the attack will have to answer for what they did, said the police.

The improvised explosive device (IED) — a six-inch metal pipe stuffed with TNT and PETN attached to a fuse with a detonator powered by batteries — was planted at the foot of the tree next to the Maha Garment Factory in Hpa-an Industrial Zone-2.

The Hpa-an police department’s deputy-superintendent Thet Naing Oo said no one was hurt in the explosion, which knocked down the banyan tree. Officials have opened an investigation under the Explosive Substances Act to look for those responsible for the attack.
