Karen National Union to hold ‘emergency meeting’

Karen National Union (KNU)’s Central Committee is preparing to hold an emergency meeting next week to discuss divisions within the organisation’s leadership.

The KNU’s Central Committee member Mahn Nyein Maung told DVB the meeting will be held on October 22 inside the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)’s Brigade-7 territory. The KNLA serves as the armed wing of the KNU.

“We are holding the meeting to mend the political discord within the KNU,” said Mahn Nyein Maung.

Two weeks ago the KNU dismissed three of its senior leaders for opening an unauthorised liaison office with the Burmese government in the state capital Hpa-an

About 30 KNU members including former KNLA Commander-in-Chief Mutu Say Poe are also planning on holding a separate meeting to discuss the controversial liaison office.
