The Shan Ethnic Affairs Organisation says that over the past three years they have documented 98 cases Shan villagers who have escaped forced service in the Kachin Independence Army.

They say as many as 180 Shan villagers remain locked in KIA ranks.

The KIA admits that they do conduct ‘recruitment campaigns’ but say they are fair and measured.
