Ko Htin Kyaw held at Insein prison

Nov 8, 2007 (DVB), Ko Htin Kyaw, one of the leaders of the original protests against fuel price hikes in August, is being held at Insein prison in Rangoon, a colleague of Ko Htin Kyaw has confirmed.

Moe Aung Soe, Ko Htin Kyaw's co-worker, said that he had learned where Ko Htin Kyaw was being held from a former detainee at Insein prison.

"Someone who has been released from Insein prison told us that Ko Htin Kyaw is being detained in Insein prison in the same ward as Min Ko Naing, Panate Htun and Ko Htun Htun Naing," said Moe Aung Soe.

"We have been informed by a special police officer that the prison will now allow us to send items for him, but we have not confirmed that yet. We are now preparing to send him some food," he said.

Moe Aung Soe also said he had heard that Ko Htin Kyaw’s general state of health is fine, though he does suffer a recurring minor health problem.

Ko Htin Kyaw was among those who initiated the protests against high commodity prices in mid-August.

He was arrested on 25 August while attempting to join a protest outside Theingyzay market.
