Lets's Talk
Time for intervention?

In recent weeks, the international community has grown stronger in its criticism of the Burmese junta following the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi. If found guilty, Burma's opposition leader will be sentenced to up to five years in prison, extending her current term of detention to 11 years.

Critics have said the trial is an excuse to keep Suu Kyi in detention beyond the scheduled 2010 elections, thereby eroding any promises of democratic reform from the ruling generals.

In this context, a debate has grown over the extent to which the international community should increase pressure on the junta. Many Western countries, including the United States and European Union, Australia and Canada, hold far-reaching sanctions against the Burmese government. Other Asian countries, particular those in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc, have instead followed a path of engagement with the regime.

In light of Suu Kyi's trial, and ongoing human rights violations against perceived dissidents, there is a case to be argued that neither avenue has worked. The question now, then, is how else can the international community push for democratic reform in Burma?

Should sanctions be dropped in favour of total engagement, or vice versa? Should Than Shwe and his cronies be brought to the International Criminal Court? Should the West even consider military intervention in Burma?

We'd like to hear your thoughts.

Intervention is crucial for the Burmese survival as a people Is the UN,too afraid of China to intervene on behalf of the Burmese?

linda (Canada/New York)

The Burmese Junta, has gone too far. The killings are beyond barbaric. We need to do something about it. Nations should start doing something real and save and promote life. That Government needs to be put down. Intervention is needed for the sake of the nations future. Violence has rage over the land and innocent children no longer dream of good tomorrows but of how to survive for the day. HELP. Their crys are too loud, as keepers of peace and bearers of democracy we should should do something about it.

Stephanie (Philippines)

I wonder why these leaders of China ,Russia and ASEAN members repeatedly said " It's the internal affairs of Myanmar." Ask them these questions.(1)When you know that a man is killing his children in your neighboring house will you say it's the internal affairs of that house and deny to help those children? Or (2)Will you block the other people who are going to help those children by saying "It's the internal affair of that house"? If you do it how stupid you are and you know that. This example includes a house and and a few people, but Myanmar has many houses , many families and many innocent people.Every government of every country treats their people as their children. Instead of following this rule Than Shwe and his regime have been killing people and the international community really knows it.This is worse than the above example. So ask them again "Are you a coward and stupid criminal supporter?" Than Shwe has shown the world that he does not care what the world said and keeping on going in his brutal way.Than Shwe and his partners should be brought to the International Criminal Court as soon as possible.

Our world, the earth is a world without love. The international community obviously knows what is happening in Myanmar and they are pushing for democratic reform in Myanmar with voices only. The military regime in Myanmar formed with rapists, robbers, thieves, cheaters and murderers have been supported by a shameless super power country and a group of cunning and selfish ASEAN members.Myanmar is like an ill deer surrounded by a group of hyenas( ASEAN ), a bear(China) which will eat it up whole and a cunning fox(Russia) waiting for the bones left.People of Myanmar are sleeping with nightmares and nobody wake up.Aung San Suu Kyi is innocent and cannot be found guilty, but surely will be imprisoned by those stupid lawless dictators. People have been expecting the western military invention for many years that can never come true and people should know that western chickens are afraid of the brutal bear. So don't waste your time. Time is running out for our future generation. There is nobody who will free you and remember that " YOU " are the only one that can make you free. " PEOPLE " , be united and try hard to get freedom by means of every possible way.

Please World, ..investigate , assist for Mdm Suu Kyi Case. If u believe, there is one world, one nation, one race, what are you waiting for to help US, Myamar. We are greatfully appreciate International Help. But I wish for more progress. Thanks.

Jaywarnaw (Malta )

The US/EU will never do any decisive thing against CHINA. Hoping for their help to get freedom is totally unrealistic. The more we shout democracy, the more Chinese support this regime will get. At the same time, we will never get enough US/EU help to get freedom. From now on the only STRATEGY is-asking the US envoy to enlighten DASSK about uselessness of staying inside BURMA, then to negotiate with regime to let DASSK go into EXILE. In return, US/EU lift all sanctions and recognize them. For this regime, it should be a very good opportunity to become world community member again, without sanctions, friendly relationship with US/EU, continues getting support from CHINA AND RUSSIA. What kind of FOOL and STUPID person is giving this IDEA? If we don’t do this, then surely we will never get freedom from any kind of DICTATORS. (b) If we do it, then once DASSK in exile, all BURMESE will be united and we can use HER effectively, manage to outsmart this regime, then we will get the most reasonable freedom. (We can discuss about this and convince majority within a short period of time, if we can get open minded genuine patriotic realistic AUDIENCE and well thinking OPPONENTS--Healthy, friendly DEBATE

When the time that the cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar the UN, United States and the world got the best chance for intervention in Myanmar. They all ran away from it.People should not expect the foreign intervention that will never come into reality. It's too late.Try to free yourself in every possible way.Be careful our country lies between a big bear and a big tiger and both of them are trying to eat it up.

Ko Sit Moan (United States)

QUESTION TO DASSK “What is your plan to free BURMA when you decide to stay inside BURMA together with ordinary BURMESE PEOPLE?” MIRACLE,OR WAITING FOR GOD. Many people are expecting greater foreign intervention. Yes, we will have it, not from the west but from CHINA,RUSSIA, NORTH KOREA, IRAN. If we get western , UN, ICC etc intervention which is great enough to bring real western democracy to BURMA, then I will be the most stupid and foolish person in the whole world. For now, the more we shout “ we want DEMOCRACY” the less chance we have to get rid of this regime. SO please change the SLOGAN “We want freedom, possible EASTERN style FREEDOM.”

DOEDOE (BURMA)

In 1988, we did not need much foreign intervention(in fact not at all).DASSK came back with unrealistic ideology,non-violent way.She should have realized and changed in time. The right person came back in wrong time with wrong idea. Now, things changed. We desperately need CHINESE endorsement. How can we get that without compromise.Foreign journalists and many political analysts know that without Chinese endorsement, Burma can not be free from this or any other dictators for now.She needs advisers. But she has millions of followers without a single good adviser, that's why she is still in wrong place with wrong ideas.I pray people see the reality now.

moewin (BURMA)

Without effective foreign intervention,Burma will not get freedom.Which foreign country and what kind of intervention?Diplomatic way will not work.Foreign military intervention is unlikely for now and risky for our own people(not a preferred way). It is DASSK job to negotiate with CHINA and RUSSIA to frighten this regime. This is the only way to give strength and courage to our real patriotic people inside the army to revolt. She can do that only if she is out side BURMA( Hopefully she would have her new realistic idea by then). It is our duty to take her out.Difficult but possible.

KYAW SWE (BURMA)

For foreseeable future, you will definitely see a Burmese gov backed by CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY only. There will be no other type of BURMESE GOV. So,if we don't want to live under any cruel dictator,we just have to join the club (CUBA,VIETNAM,VENEZUELA etc). But even if we want to join that CLUB,membership fee is very high, because only DASSK is allowed to join.So we have to take her out, pull her out whether she likes it or not.20 years is more then enough to let her try with that unrealistic passive resistance non violent way.Even if the army split now,the group who will and can please China will become our gov.DASSK must be smart enough to get that group. She can do that only if she is out side BURMA.PS-don't try to bring people into street to demonstrate now. We all just have to die and be jailed. without getting freedom.

koko (BURMA)

Knowing things only after those happen is not for BURMESE people. Time is not on our side anymore.PLEASE don't waste our time for help from INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT, UN,OR THE WEST.JUST think who are the rulers of the world, and how they are ruling this world. If one nuclear super power doesn't agree, then the rest superpowers have only two choices (a) leave the small suffering country alone in the hand of the dictator backed by China or Russia (b)confrontation with CHINA or RUSSIA.SO, for Burma they choose option(a).UN,ICC are fakes and for petty theft alone. If we don't know this reality,we will never get freedom.

TOE TOE (BURMA)

Neither sanctions nor engagements had woked. Now Junta is trying to jail Daw Suu counting on China support again. If China does not side with the democracy groups now, given the facts failed attempts to pass resolutions in UNSG when junta violently suppressed the monk-led up rising and Cyclone Nargis events; then it is time for outside intervention. US, EU and Asean5 (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore & Philipine) must consider sending in troops into Buma. NLD must declare war on Junta and announce the declaration that BURMA now OFFICIALLY INVITE MULTI-NATIONAL FORCES to COME INTO Burma to rescue the 44 millions refugees of about half century. This is the only solution to avoid Bloodbath.

Welcome DVB Moderator for your view commences on topic by topic. It's time for UN, US, EU and the concerned good neighboring countries to involve in Myanmar affairs as panels! Especially NCGUB and out side leaders must try their best to bring international alliance who have weights and powers as witnesses what's really happened in Myanmar is no more internal affair, not regional affair, but global affair! No law at all in Myanmar become more and more crystal through the case of Daw Su Kyi! Yes, it's time for Action to international communities!

U Saw Kelvin (Myanmar)

Should sanctions be dropped in favour of total engagement, or vice versa? Yes, senctions should be dropped by negotiations with all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi,Zar Ga Na...... all. Burmese junta will agree if negotiation of releasing prisoners and dropping sanctions. USA, EU should try to negotiate by helping with China and Russia.

If the man entering into the house killed the detainee, how will be happened. It is the breach of security of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The Burmese junta has full responsibility for lack of security to the detainee. The NLD and outside organizations should try to sue t for the lack of security of their leader.

No (UK)

Yes Than Shwe and his co conspirators have a case of Human rights abuse to answer. Just simply denying someone the right to a fair and legal trail eg Aung San Su Kyi is a case of Human rights Violations. Its clear it something that Than Shwe and his criminal associates have made up to keep Daw Su Kyi imprisoned. I think that there should be a military invasion of Burma to free her from the tyranny that Than Shwe has shackled the Burmese people with.
