Life on the frontline

The conflict in Kachin state is reaching an intensity not witnessed since a raft of ceasefire agreements were signed in the late 1980s. Troops from the Burmese army are nearing the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Army in Laiza, close to the border with China, and clashes are rapidly becoming a daily occurrence. But as these pictures demonstrate, a surreal sense of normality still exists right from the frontline to Laiza, where civilian and military life have long coexisted.

This set of photographs were taken by Kachin youths following a seven-day workshop with Documentary Arts Asia in Laiza.
