Man arrested for gruesome police murder

An Irrawaddy police sergeant has died after being attacked by an escaped detainee at a local station.

The officer was rushed by ambulance to Rangoon General Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries and died en route.

The sergeant had been hacked to death with a garden hoe by the escaped prisoner, identified as Aung Kyaw Win, who had been detained at the Inbin village station in for unruly drunken behaviour on Friday morning.

He had initially been assigned to work at a plantation at the police station, but escaped with another detainee and attacked the sergeant on duty at approximately 10am.

After fleeing the scene, the Nyaugchedauk resident was later apprehended by locals in a Kongyi village farm.

A second suspect, a man from the village of Hmandan, was treated for non-critical injuries at the regional Inbin hospital.
