Moulment residents chip in for fire engines

Feb 10, 2009 (DVB), Residents of Moulmein are planning to club together to buy their own fire engines because they cannot rely on the state fire department, a local resident said.

Residents became particularly concerned after the lower market in Moulmein burned down in December last year.

Locals have decided to buy 11 fire trucks to meet the needs of the wards and villages, a resident said.

"We all have to coordinate and contribute but I don't think many people will participate," he said.

"During the summer, they use fire engines to sell water [during the day] and just leave them empty at night. When fires break out at night, the engines have no water."

The fire department's water tanks and hosepipes are also said to be in disrepair, but neither the municipal authorities nor the fire department is making the effort to repair them, the resident added.

During the dry summer season, people live in fear of fires breaking out because of the insufficient number of fire engines and lack of water supply.

The fire department and municipal authorities could not be reached for comment.
