Nargis book raises funds for survivors

Feb 11, 2009 (DVB), A book of articles written by famous Burmese writers about Cyclone Nargis is selling well in Burma, raising funds for victims of the cyclone which hit the country in May last year.

The book was published by the Hnin Wai Ne Win publishing house and is titled ‘The storm and the human being’.

Contributors include seasoned writers such Ludu Sein Win, Maung Soo San and Ne Win Myint and young writers such as Lwan Wai Naing, Ko Myo (Myanmar Sar) and 35 other authors.

The book was published and distributed in December priced at 2500 kyat and 1000 copies were sold within a month.

None of the writers involved will accept any money for their contributions and all the proceeds will be donated to areas affected by Nargis, the publisher said.

The idea for the book was conceived after the storm struck and it was published as a record of events, the published added.

Hein Latt, one of the contributing writers, said the proceeds from the book would be donated to people in Rangoon's Kunchangone township.

"Singers sing to raise money, actors make films to raise money and we will donate all the profits including the advances we have made from using our brains," he said.

"We have raised 2 or 3 million kyat."
