Detained poet in hospital with hernia

Mar 21, 2008 (DVB)–Poet Saw Wai, who was detained after the publication of his poem containing a hidden political message, is being treated in Insein prison hospital, his wife said.

Saw Wai’s wife, Ma Nan San San Aye, said he was admitted to hospital a week ago with a hernia.

"He said he is recovering from swelling in his digestive system from his condition but is still in a very uncomfortable state because of the hernia," she said.

Ma Nan San San Aye said she had asked Insein prison authorities on the first day her husband was admitted to hospital to give him permission to undergo an operation at a private hospital.

"It'd be better if he could have an operation, but the prison officials have made no response to my request," she said.

Saw Wai was arrested on 22 January after a poem he wrote with a hidden message that read “megalomaniac Than Shwe” was published in Achit Journal the day before.
