Police in the Arakanese town of Maungdaw say they seized nearly seven million amphetamine pills on Monday with an estimated street value of around 14 billion kyat (US$11 million).
Maungdaw district police told DVB the drugs, known regionally as ya-ba, were seized in two separate locations – a stash of over 6.2m pills found hidden among a brickworks site near the gateway to the town, and another cache with over 680,000 pills in the village of Latha.
Local police commander Col. Nyan Win Oo said the authorities are looking for a Maungdaw resident named Nyi Chit, a prime suspect in connection with the drugs.
According to the local police’s statistics – over 8m ya-ba pills have been seized in the Arakan border town so far this year, with estimated value of more than 16bn kyat.
