City of Joy, a short documentary by DVB that followed the lives of squatters in Rangoon, was last night awarded Best News Broadcast at the 2017 National Press Awards.
According to the Myanmar Journalist Association panel, City of Joy was chosen for its “thought-provoking presentation” of issues that are all too often hidden from or forgotten by the general public.
Moreover, the panel concluded, the documentary, which was part of a regular DVB series called Contemporary Sketches, was presented to the Burmese viewership in “a straight-to-the-point manner, with high value and quality in both its technical and news aspects.”
Runner-up in the Best News Broadcast award was another episode from the Contemporary Sketches series – one in which the Burmese audience was given a rare glimpse into the lives two high-school students in Arakan State – one an Arakanese Buddhist and the other a Rohingya Muslim. Both were living in IDP camps after losing their homes during communal riots in 2012. The programme explored the similarities and differences in their lives, and their hopes and dreams for the future.
