A fire that broke out at around 6 pm last night has wiped out Mandalay’s second-largest market, the Mingalar Market Plaza in Chanaye Tharzan Township.
It took 100 firetrucks and 600 firefighters around four hours to bring the blaze under control, according to Burma’s Ministry of Information.
The fire reportedly started in the market’s D Wing and rapidly spread to the rest of the 900-unit complex. At least seven people were reported injured.
The ministry estimated that around 65 percent of the market had been damaged, including a total of 297 units (one office, five showrooms, 263 garment and fabric shops, and 28 other shop spaces) that were completely destroyed.
The mayor of Mandalay and Mandalay Division’s chief minister both rushed to the scene to oversee the firefighting effort, which included personnel from towns near Burma’s second-largest city.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The value of lost property is also unknown at this time.
