Three inmates escaped from Henzada prison in Irrawaddy Division on Wednesday morning.
The inmates – Thet Paing Soe and Htun Htun Naing, serving three years each for theft, and Pho Cho, detained and awaiting trial for allegedly selling copper wiring – made their escape from the prison on 21 January by climbing the prison’s wall, a DVB reporter in Henzada, officially known as Hinthada, confirmed.
Initial reports from the prison said the three first made a hole on the floor of a meditation hall and climbed down to the level below, before sneaking out and climbing over the brick perimeter wall.
Regional prison administration officials said they were investigating the scene of the escape, but refused to comment further.
There have been several cases of inmates escaping from Henzada Prison over the past 20 years.
