Aung Zaw Oo got the shock of his life when he woke up on Wednesday morning – a giant crack had appeared straight through the main road in his village, Chaungkyin, down to the Myittha River.
He says that if the village continues to experience heavy rainfall, many residents are worried that the fissure in the road will develop into a landslide.
“The crack appeared this morning along the road next to the village – it’s about 600 metres in length. If the rain doesn’t stop, it may trigger a landslide like the one we experienced 10 years ago when the whole road sank beneath us,” he told DVB.
“The landslide 10 years ago shifted the road about 50 yards from its original location,” he added. “Houses, trees, everything slid away towards the river.”
According to local officials, six homes in the area had to be evacuated because of the risk of a landslide.
