Aug 27, 2008 (DVB), The National League for Democracy has said it is very concerned by reports of detained NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi refusing food deliveries.

NLD spokesperson U Nyan Win said he could not confirm speculation that the NLD leader is on a hunger strike, but said she had been refusing her regular supplies of food for the past two weeks.

"About two weeks ago, the person who went to deliver provisions to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was told by her that there was no need to come again until her demands are met, this is what we heard," U Nyan Win said.

"We don't know any more about the matter or whether she is staging a hunger strike."

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's demands reportedly include allowing her assistant Daw Khin Khin Win, a retired school teacher from Bago division, and Daw Khin Khin Win's son to come and go from the house freely.

According to an AFP report, a Burmese regime official has denied that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is on a hunger strike.

"It is just rumours, it is not true," the official, who refused to be named, said on Tuesday.

"We have not got any [political] demands from her."

A statement by the NLD (Liberated Area) claimed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was making a stand to highlight her disappointment in the lack of progress made by United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari in his reconciliation efforts and to show that the people of Burma do not accept the unilateral actions of the government.

The statement also expressed concern for the health of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's two companions if she continues to refuse food deliveries and urged the international community to take immediate action, warning that there could be a violent outbreak if anything happened to the NLD leader.
