Nov 3, 2007 (DVB), National League for Democracy spokesperson Nyan Win is hopeful that the NLD executive committee will be able to meet United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, he said on Thursday.

In an interview with DVB, Nyan Win said that Gambari had asked to meet NLD members on his last visit, without success, and he expected the special envoy to continue to push for a meeting this time.

Gambari is due to arrive in Burma today and stay until 8 November, and he has said that he aims to meet representative from a variety of groups during his visit, including those he was not able to see on his earlier visit from 29 September to 2 October.

Gambari's trip will be followed by a visit from UN special rapporteur Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, who has been sent to the country to investigate the events surrounding the public demonstrations in August and September and the military response.

Nyan Win also said he expected that the NLD executive committee would be able to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and find out what had been discussed in the NLD leader's meeting with government minister for relations Aung Kyi.

"The NLD, being a political party, should know about political developments taking place in the country. But, all I can say is that the situation precludes us from having that right," he said.

When asked about the August and September demonstrations and the possibility of new protests, Nyan Win said that transparent dialogue could have resolved the situation, but the violent crackdown and mass arrests by the government had only created more problems.

"We have been saying right from the very beginning that the method the incumbent government had applied to end the protests by the monks was not going to resolve the problems," he said.

"We believe that resorting to violence, making arrests, and detaining people will not resolve problems, and that is the reason why more issues are emerging now."
