Poultry ban after bird flu outbreak in Monywa

The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department in Sagaing Division has imposed a temporary ban on the transportation of poultry across the region amid a fresh outbreak of bird flu.

Aung Than Win, the chairperson of the Monywa Livestock Breeders Association, said the government department had announced the suspension of all poultry transportation in order to contain the outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza, which was detected when a large number of chickens and quails died early this month in division capital Monywa.

“As a security measure, the transportation of poultry has been temporarily banned and we are also warning breeders not to sell or eat the diseased chickens,” he said, adding that his association was first informed of a mass death of chickens on a farm on 18 January.

Between 18 -25 February, thousands of chickens and quails within the Monywa Poultry Breeding Zone were culled.

Kaung Khant Thaw, a chicken breeder, told DVB he lost all the chickens at his farm due to bird flu.

“My chickens kept dying until there were none left,” said the breeder.

As of 26 February, 13,600 quails and 3,200 chickens had died in the outbreak.

The government announced via state-run media the H5N1 outbreak in Monywa, and provided instructions on how to prevent the disease from spreading to humans.

This has been the third avian influenza outbreak reported in Monywa following incidents in 2006 and 2010.
