Suu Kyi opponent admits defeat, while she urges calm

Aung San Suu Kyi’s opponent admitted defeat last night in Kawhmu township, Rangoon Division, while she urged supporters to treat her victory with “honour”.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party’s (USDP) candidate, Dr Soe Min, insisted that he was not sad about the defeat. “I acknowledge from the elections that the people love Amay Suu [Mother Suu] – Kawhmu is all Amay Suu’s now – people here can now live happily after. Everyone has their trust in her,” said Dr Soe Min.

Meanwhile Suu Kyi warned supporters not to gloat over the victory. “It is only natural for the people and National League for Democracy members to be contended. However, we must absolutely refrain from making remarks, behaviours and doings that will make the other party and individuals feel sad.”

“I would like all National League for Democracy members to particularly be mindful to make honourable this victory for the people.”

Thousands of jubilant NLD supporters spilled onto the streets of Rangoon last night to celebrate the news that Suu Kyi had secured a historic seat in parliament. This morning Suu Kyi called the election “a triumph of the people” adding she “hope[s] this will be the beginning of a new era.”

The NLD has claimed to have won a landslide victory of all 44 seats contested by the party, although official results are yet to be released.

Early estimates suggest that Suu Kyi has won around 70-80 % of the votes in Kawhmu township. Dr Soe Min claims he won more votes than her in only two poll stations.

The Union Election Commission is expected to publish official results later this week.
