Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi met with President Thein Sein in Naypyidaw yesterday for the first time since being elected a member of parliament, according to the party’s spokesperson Ohn Kyaing.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) did not disclose what the opposition leader and the president discussed, saying only that the meeting was “most welcome”. Railway Minister Aung Min, who is currently leading the government’s ethnic reconciliation processes, was also present.

Sunday’s meeting marked the third time Suu Kyi and Thein Sein have sat down for one-on-one talks since she was released from house arrest in November 2010.

The duo first met in secret last August, after which the NLD officially re-registered as a party and agreed to participate in April’s by-elections. Their next meeting came as the party became embroiled in a much-publicised controversy over its refusal to swear a parliamentary oath to defend the constitution. The NLD later conceded and its MPs agreed to take the oath.
