Temporary water shortage in Rangoon

A temporary water shortage in Rangoon has hit the northern suburbs of the city caused by a technical default in one of the main water reservoirs.

The Rangoon municipal (Yangon City Development Committee) has warned residents that pumps at the Hlawga reservoir have been temporarily shut down after a fault was detected at the main distribution pipe.

The department said several townships that are supplied water from Hlawga including Mingaladon,

Shwepyitha, Insein, Hlaing Tharyar and Mayangon will experience a water shortage as the pipe undergoes emergency maintenance procedures. They stressed that other areas of the city supplied with water from Gyobyu, Hpugyi and Ngamoeyeik reservoirs will not be affected. There is no timeline for how long the maintenance will take before the water reservoir is repaired.

Pressure is mounting on the government to improve its capacity to respond to resource scarcity crises, in the wake of 2015 countrywide flooding and this year’s arrival of El Nino’s extreme weather patterns.
