Feb 19, 2008 (DVB), A gas explosion took place on Sunday at a government compressed natural gas refuelling station in the Dagon port area of Tharkayta township, Rangoon, causing no casualties, locals said.
A New Dagon resident who lives near government refuelling station 021 said that township residents heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion coming from the station at around 11.15am local time.
"It was a very loud noise but I didn’t see a lot of smoke there," said the resident.
An official from the central fire brigade department confirmed that an explosion had taken place and said authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
He said no one was killed or injured in the explosion.
"We sent a couple of fire trucks to the scene and other fire departments from nearby townships did the same," said the central brigade official.
"We are still not clear about the cause of this but luckily no one was injured."
A fire brigade official from Tharkayta township said the explosion could have been caused by a burst gas pipe, and added that gas station employees are now being questioned by government officials in connection with the incident.
Another fire brigade official from San Chaung township said that one of their trucks sent to the explosion site flipped over on its way back to the fire station and reports of casualties in the crash are now being investigated.
