Sep 10, 2008 (DVB), Four National League for Democracy members in Yaynanchaung township were held and interrogated by local authorities for 24 hours, according to one of those questioned.
Yaynanchaung NLD organising wing member Ko Tint Lwin told DVB he and three colleagues , Ko Myint Lwin, Ko Aw Gyi (also known as Win Naing) and Ko Nan Win , were questioned by township authorities and the provincial police chief from around 4pm on 8 September until 5pm the next day.
"Their questions mainly revolved around 12 issues but they particularly focused on the bombing plans mentioned by the Burmese police chief Khin Yi at Sunday’s press conference," Tint Lwin said.
Khin Yi had accused NLD members of planting an improvised explosive device at the entrance to the Shwepyitha townhip Union Solidarity and Development Association office in ward 6 of the township on 1 July, causing some damage to the building.
"They asked if we had any connection with the case or if we had heard anything about it," Tint Lwin said.
"They also questioned us about the NLD’s future plans such as whether we have anything planned this month."
Tint Lwin said that the NLD leadership would not support the use of violence in its struggle for democracy.
"The NLD would never do such a thing as bombing , the headquarters would never direct us to do something like that and also, we don’t possess anything like explosives , not even firecrackers," Tint Lwin said.
"The NLD will never take up arms to win power , Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would never accept that. She had said in the past that she doesn’t want to repeat the cycle of seizing power by force," he said.
"We will continue our democracy movement using peaceful means."
